How to Choose a Mattress

1. Understand Spring Types

Pocket springs are individually wrapped in fabric pockets, allowing each spring to move independently. This provides targeted support and reduces partner disturbance. Open coil (Bonnell) springs are interconnected and cheaper, but less supportive. For the best support, look for 1000+ pocket springs in a king size.

2. Natural vs Synthetic Fillings

Natural fillings like wool, cotton, cashmere, and horsehair are breathable, temperature-regulating, and long-lasting. Brands like Harrison Spinks and Hypnos specialise in natural mattresses. Synthetic fillings like polyester and foam are more affordable but less breathable and may need replacing sooner.

3. Firmness Guide

Firmness is subjective, but as a guide: side sleepers often prefer medium softness (shoulders and hips sink in); back sleepers suit medium-firm; front sleepers need firmer support. Your body weight also matters — heavier sleepers need firmer support to prevent sinking too deep.

4. Mattress Depth

Standard mattresses are 20–25cm deep. Deep mattresses (28–35cm+) often contain more layers of fillings and can feel more luxurious. Make sure your bed frame or divan base can accommodate the depth, and remember that deep mattresses need deeper fitted sheets.

5. Try Before You Sleep

You spend a third of your life in bed — it's worth testing mattresses in person. Lie on each one for at least 10 minutes in your usual sleeping position. Our team at Stone Dam Mills can guide you through the options without any pressure.
