How to Choose a Sofa

1. Measure Your Space

Before you fall in love with a sofa, measure your room. Note the width, depth, and height of the space where the sofa will sit. Don't forget to measure doorways, hallways, and staircases — the sofa needs to get into the room! A good rule: leave at least 45cm of walking space around the sofa.

2. Choose the Right Size

Sofas typically come in 2-seater, 3-seater, and 4-seater sizes, plus corner and modular options. For a family of four, a 3-seater with an armchair or a corner sofa works well. If you entertain often, consider a larger 4-seater or a modular system you can reconfigure.

3. Fabric vs Leather

Fabric sofas offer more colour and texture options and are generally warmer and softer. They're ideal if you like to change your décor. Leather sofas are durable, easy to clean, and age beautifully — but they can feel cold in winter and sticky in summer. Consider your lifestyle: pets and young children may favour hard-wearing fabrics or protected leathers.

4. Consider Seat Comfort

Seat cushions come in three main types: foam (firm, holds shape), fibre (soft, plump, needs regular plumping), and feather/down (luxurious, sink-in soft, needs the most maintenance). Many high-quality sofas use a combination — foam core with a fibre or feather wrap for the best of both worlds.

5. Frame & Construction

A quality sofa starts with a solid frame. Look for hardwood frames (beech, oak, ash) with screwed and glued joints — not stapled. Ask about the springs: serpentine springs are common, but hand-tied eight-way springs (found in brands like Tetrad) offer superior comfort and longevity.

6. Test Before You Buy

The best way to choose a sofa is to sit on it. Visit our 5-floor showroom in Halifax and try different styles, sizes, and fillings. What feels comfortable for five minutes may not feel the same after an hour — take your time.
